The Boundary Method: This organisational hack is a great way to improve the visuals of your home as well as beginning your decluttering journey. A method coined by Erica Lucas, the purpose is to declutter by containing โitems together within the confines of a shelf, drawer, basket, or cube.โ There are some easy steps to work through with this method.ย
- Step 1: Decide the boundary for the category.
- Step 2: Clear the entire space and wipe it down.ย
- Step 3: Gather the items in that category.ย
- Step 4: Decide what to keep first โ go for your favourites.ย ย
- Step 5: Declutter the rest or redefine the boundary
Step 1: Define your boundary
First think about how much space the category is taking up and realistically how much you think it SHOULD be taking up. If you think the space needs to be reduced then decide the boundaries for that category and we will see if this suits over the following few steps.
Step 2: Empty and clean the space
Part of the process is about making the space ready to be used. Emptying out and giving it a clean will help reset the space and give you the opportunity to visualise what you want the space to look like.
Step 3: Gather like items together
Make sure you have all of the items in this category together. Hunt for any around the house so that you can make accurate decisions about what to keep.
Step 4: Pick your favourites
Which items are you go to favourites? What do you reach for regularly that you know fit and suit you? Or items that you use over other items. These are definite keeps. Now start deciding which other items you think are essential. The left overs will be looked at in the next step. Restock the space with your favourites and decide whether you are happy with the amount within the boundary given.
Step 5: Declutter or redefine the boundary
With everything that is left you need to decide whether you want to declutter them or redefine the boundary and make it bigger so that you can keep more of what you love. It could be that rather than filling only one drawer the category will fill more than one drawer instead.
