2021 Self Care Guide – 10 things to do right now!

This is definitely needed right now! Lockdown 3.0 has pushed everyone to their limits. Not only due to being restricted from activities and social things, but the continual drum of it all.

I reached the wall about 1.5 weeks ago. One extra job added to the list and I tipped over the edge. I then stopped everything, put down my phone and took some deep breaths. It was then that I realised I had not been following my own self care routine. I decided to get back on this and add some more things into it to get me back on track with a healthy and clear mindset. Phew….back to me! It has meant that when new things have come my way, I can tackle them with the right head on my shoulders.

So here are my top self-care tips!

  • Reading – this is my go to! I think I like the escapism of getting into a good book. It transports me to another world and I am totally at one with this. When I come back to the real world I have a new sense of perspective.
  • Relaxing bath – Never underestimate the healing powers of a bubble bath! It’s good for the muscles too. A good opportunity to tie in reading!
  • Exercise – I know this is probably the last thing on your mind, but even a simple walk can do wonders for getting a new spectre on things.
  • No phone days! I am guilty of not doing this as often as I should, but in fairness to me I barely use my phone during the week.
  • Music – pop on your favourite radio channel or playlist and get dancing around the room. I am listening to music as we speak – it’s my favourite thing to do – have a dance and sing along! Not sure the neighbours appreciate my singing talents!
  • Tidy your space – tidy space, tidy mind is certainly a motto that works for me! Pop a song on and blitz the house for 15 mins to put things back in their rightful place.
  • Phone a friend – I am not sure why this is so far down the list. but quality friends are worth their weight in gold. Check in and others and share how you are doing. It can take a huge weight off your shoulders.
  • Write a to do list – if you are feeling overwhelmed with life, it may help to jot down a list of things that need to be done. Once you have done this, you need to prioritise which things need to be done first and which things can wait. It might help you to see clearly the important jobs that need to get done.
  • Get outside – fresh air and a different view can really clear your head. This is a good alternative if you don’t fancy a full exercise regime.
  • Sleep – get a good sleep routine in place and make sure it is enough sleep. Aim for between 7.5 and 8 hours a night, with a regular bed time. This is something I have been focused on more recently. It definitely improves your focus and ability to take on challenges in daily life.

I hope this can help you back on track to feeling a bit more you!

I would love to hear your favourite self care tips!

  1. V. Nice and informative blog again. In addition my tip for everyone is to try not to drink alcohol during the week but make it a treat for the weekend. First lock down we started drinking a glass most days and stared to feel a lot worse after a while! Secondly, if time is limited, for exercise I’ve found run running 5 mins round the block at a reasonable pace really keeps you going! Thirdly, consider the small shops, say on Sidwell Street for shopping if that is possible with work. There are hardly any people around and you feel so much safer.
